My new kitchen toy

I finally got a Kitchen Aid stand mixer for Christmas – YAY!  I’ve been putting off really asking for one because I had the excuse of not having room in my kitchen but finally this year, I broke down and asked Tommy for one for Christmas.  I figured that I could just make room.  I felt that I needed one or my life wouldn’t be complete.  And after many discussions with my good friends Nikki and Clara over which one to get (Nikki made it quite clear that the most important question was “what color do I want?”- ha).  So after making my decision, my wonderful husband bought me exactly what I wanted – the Artisan, 5 qt in…Gloss Cinnamon!  It matches my kitchen so perfectly.  I want to just pet it and look at it.  I’m in love with it.  Best. Gift. Ever.

My Fab New (Old) Bowls

October 6, 2008 at 2:38 am | Posted in kitchen, kitchen utensils, new toys, Randomness | 12 Comments

I am such a sentimental person in case you haven’t figured that out by now.  Not so long ago I needed a really good mixing bowl since I’ve started baking more.  My mom gave me one that she had – it wasn’t anything special really, but since she gave it to me, it instantly became special.  Last week, I opened the cabinet where my bowls are kept and out rolled that bowl onto the floor and it crashed into about 40 pieces.  I wanted to cry.  When Tommy came home I told him and he felt so bad for me so he told me to buy some new mixing bowls.  I wasn’t that into shopping for “new” mixing bowls.  I wanted that one.  I looked at Bed Bath and Beyond, Linens N Things, WalMart, etc., but I wasn’t into anything.  I decided to look on ebay, so I typed in “mixing bowls” and on the first page came up a Pyrex bowl that was the Spring Blossom pattern.  I instantly knew that I HAD to find a full set of these bowls and buy them immediately!  You see, these were the bowls that my mom had when I was little.  I remember these bowls vividly – no matter where we went, these bowls went.  Since we moved so much, I’m not sure what happened to her set, but I knew I wanted these bowls so everytime that I used them to bake and cook, I would be reminded of growing up.

I found several sets of these bowls and they were somewhat pricey, but not too bad for vintage Pyrex.  I told Tommy those were the bowls that I wanted so he did a quick search and found a really cheap set on Ebay for me!  He bought them for me right away.  I received them this weekend and I couldn’t be happier!  I used them for the first time tonight and I love them!!!  Thank you to my wonderful husband for buying these for me because he knows what a sentamentalist I am.  : )

Without further adieu….!!!

February SBGEX: Kitchen Gadget Exchange

February 24, 2008 at 9:37 pm | Posted in Cupcakes, Fun, kitchen utensils, SBGEX | 3 Comments

As you all know by now, a group of my wonderful foodie friends and I have a “baked goods exchange” every month.  This month we decided to do instead of baked goods, a kitchen gadget exchange.  I thought this sounded like so much!!!  There are always gadgets that I want but won;t actually buy for myself (among some of my current wants – a garlic press, a mini muffin pan, a dough scoop…I could go on!) ever.

One of the things I have been wanting is a little set to help me learn to ice cupcakes and cakes – something to actually make my icing look pretty!  Some of my friends do amazing things with cupcakes (like Clara @ iheartcuppycakes).  Now, while I doubt I ever get that into it, I would like to be able to do some neat things every now again.

My February gift arrived Friday evening and I was so excited!!  My secret baker/exchanger this month was….Alanna!!!  I opened it up and inside was a 25 piece Wilton cake decorating set!!!  But wait, that wasn’t all….also some awesome Anne Taintor napkins, because I just adore her stuff.  But best of all, she had put in some of her latest cupcakes – the Vanilla Nut Martini cupcakes.  I have to tell you, what is so funny about this is that all week I have been telling her how good these look and how I couldn’t wait to make them this weekend.  I have been literally just drooling over them – I LOOVE vanilla and these just looked amazing!!  So now I don’t actually  have to make them this weekend – I can just eat these!  Um, actually though, they are already gone.  They were so good.  They didn’t last long.  My best friend was literally just eating the icing out of the pastry bag.  These are hands down, THE best cupcakes I have ever eaten.  The icing absolutely  makes the cupcake.  You are awesome Alanna!!!!!

Foodie related Christmas gifts!

I love Christmas!!! : ) I love buying gifts and I love receiving new things as well, especially new things for my kitchen since that is my latest obsession. I received a couple of gifts that I was really excited about so I wanted to share those.

I asked my mother in law for a food processor. I don’t know exactly how often I will use it but I really thought I needed one. I chop up a lot of veggies so I am thinking this will make things a lot easier for me. I was so excited to get it!! I used it last night for the first time. Will loves it. I think it is his favorite kitchen tool of mine. HA!

I love cookbooks. I love just looking through them. I get so excited when I get my new Cooking Light in the mail and getting a new cookbook is 10 times that excitement. Tommy and I came home late from his parents on Christmas Eve and there was a package waiting at our door. It was from my good friend and fellow foodie Clara!!! I couldn’t wait to open it!! The gift was so perfect for me – a wine lover’s cookbook!!! It doesn’t get any better than that for me! She was so sweet to send it…thank you Clara!!!!!!

My other two favorite gifts that relate to my kitchen are a Linens N Things gift card from the kids and a Winestyles gift card from Tommy. Now I need to decide what to buy at those stores…mmm… : )

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!!! : )

My Fave Bread Bowl

I loved getting cool new stuff for the kitchen for our wedding – even if I didn’t really NEED it. 🙂 One of our gifts was an awesome biscuit basket made by Eucalyptus Stoneware (http://www.eucalyptus-stoneware.com/).

This basket is awesome if you eat a lot of bread, biscuits, etc. You put it in the oven for about 15 minutes on 350 degrees. Then you wrap your bread, biscuits, etc. in a cloth napkin, place them in the basket and serve. The “ropes” on the basket will cool off in a few minutes, but the base stays hot for a really long time. It’s a great way to keep bread warm on the table!

My new kitchen toys

In honor of my new love for all things cooking, this weekend I purchased two new kitchen toys that I “needed”.

Saturday morning I attended a silent auction for a charity that I belong to. Many of the items were things I would never want in my house, can’t imagine using, etc. However, there was a Pampered Chef pie pan that I had my eye on. And I won it! 🙂 Now, I just have to find some great recipes to use it!

Also on a completely different spectrum, I bought a meat tenderizer. I am not a big meat eater at all. However, I am trying to broaden my horizons, so we’ll see how it goes. You know in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” when Tula tells her aunt that Ian doesn’t eat meat and the aunt says in disbelief, “What? You don’t eat no meat??”, I am pretty sure that is how a conversation with myself and that aunt would go. : ) Anyway, I used it tonight on chicken breasts and I liked it. I enjoyed the pounding. Something therapeutic about it. HA!
